Dumpster Diving and Sun Dogs.

So a while back while we were on one of our trips to Anchorage, we saw this frame out by the road for someone's trash. Being the somewhat-hoarder that I am, I snagged it up for a rainy day. The frame was in tact, it was just that the artwork had come unglued. I knew I could think up something useful for a huge frame.

Well this week it found a purpose. I've been pining for a chalkboard somewhere in the house and Bry took some chalkboard spraypaint I'd bought, painted the backside of the artwork and nailed it to the frame. It's perfect! It can hang on the wall and is super light, so we can just take it down for Ever when she wants to draw.

This is not an extraordinary picture of a sun dog, but is special simply because it was taken from our kitchen. From wikipedia:

A sun dog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, from Greek parēlion, "beside the sun"; also called a mock sun) is an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun. They are formed by plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds or, during very cold weather, by ice crystals called diamond dust drifting in the air at low levels. These crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them by 22°. If the crystals are randomly oriented, a complete ring around the sun is seen — a halo.

  1. I love this picture. What a fine view. I used to (well still do) want a band called the Sundogs. :) I have always been fascinated by them. Also, I love the chalkboard!
