{I was a chimney sweep ... that unfortunately lost my tools.}

Ghoulishly Green Key Lime Pie

So my Nigella recipe for this week was selected after I stumbled across some key limes at the organic grocery store in Valdez during a basketball trip. Somewhat random. But they were just perfect for the Key Lime Pie recipe, which was delicious and simple. My heavy hand with the food coloring turned out to coordinate well with Halloween, thank goodness.

Jo promised to make some sort of spooky cupcake for her recipe this week. Hopefully she'll share so I can post a picture for you :)

Gakona version of the Zoo.

So today we took another trip to the Gakona Petting Zoo :) Also known as: the neighbors house. This time armed with old apples to bribe our friends closer. It was a lovely way to spend the morning. I compare this to you urban folk getting to go to the zoo. Fortunately, Ever doesn't even know what she's missing by only seeing three species of animals.

Learning about pumpkins the hard way ....

So my sister and Jose bought us two big, beautiful pumpkins this fall. They were perfect.

And I ruined both of them.

The first one I ruined before I even got a chance to carve it. Snow sat on it for a few days, I brought it inside, it rotted.

Pumpkin No. 2 was carved into a lovely, lovely owl. (Just like this picture from I thought, "Well, this one I'll just keep inside, then the snow won't ruin it." Left for a basketball trip. Came back two days later, and my beautiful owl was turning blue and the inside was a terrible web of mold.

A No-Picture Update.

Another week come and gone ... so fast. Because of some computer issues this week, I don't have any new pictures. Which is super sad because I had some great ones of Ever and Bry. So bummed.

Jo and I kept up with our Nigella cooking, although this time we had to do it seperately. Jo made the "Jam-Doughnut Muffins". They were incredible and beautiful. To me, they tasted just like shortbread, which I love. I made the "Toffee Apples". (I did have pictures, but no more.) They fall under the "Children" chapter, but I think you'd have to be pretty picky about which age of children you share them with. The toffee was SOOO chewy that I didn't let Ever near them and it would be simply torture for any kid with braces. They were a tasty treat still ... took me back to fair days.

Ever's been keeping us busy ... We've come to agreement that she's officially reached the all-dreaded terrible two's.

12 degrees this morning when we woke up. Winter is here.

Boots, blocks, & a buddy.

{As you can see, we are still working on Ever's smile.}
{Thank goodness we had 2 pairs of rain boots to wear in the house while playing, it was about to get ugly :) }

{Trying to persuade the neighbor's goats & horse to come over and say hi.} How much action can two little ones fit into a couple of hours?!? Boots, blocks, jumping on Grampa, looking for goats, chasing dogs, and calling for horses. A busy morning indeed.

Comfort Cooking.

Last week Jo and I had our first "Nigella Night" (or Nigella Noon, as it was) ... Jo got this cookbook last year and we both fell in love. So a few weeks ago, she gifted me my own copy and we plan to cook our way through it this winter.

The recipes we selected for our first date were Apple Kuchen and Cheese Blintzes. While Rowan took a snooze, Ever, Jo, and I cooked away. Unfortunately, we didn't get to complete both recipes in time for Ever's nap. So because of time and pan restraints, the Apple Kuchen didn't quite turn out. We'll have to give it a try again soon ... However, the cheese blintzes were delightful. Definitely a once-in-a-while treat, but wonderful to know they're there :)

Junior High basketball is in full swing, so everything is planned around daily practice and weekend trips. Yesterday I made a chicken pot pie and pumpkin pie (Mom's 9x13 version, which Bry calls a pumpkin cake). We all came down with a case of the winter yucks last night, so this week we'll be laying pretty low, eating our comfort foods, and trying to get better as quickly as possible.

What She's Working on Now.

Building towers and ABC's ... a very busy girl. But with today's new snow, we're going to have to take a break to go out and eat some.
P.S. Neil Diamond keeps showing up on the radio -- makes me think of Mom and Stacey :)

Playing and Praying.

Today's one of those nice days where we don't have to go anywhere. I love these days.

Ever's busy finding new areas of the house (the windowsill!) to explore and I'm trying to drum up some energy to get my chores done.
At a retreat I attended the other day, the speaker talked about the feeling of "receiving" a prayer. She said there have been times in her life where she's had the feeling that someone somewhere was sending prayers her way and all she could do was fall down on her knees and receive those prayers. I hope the people I'm praying for today can experience that feeling ...
